Reading Recovery: Early Intervention is Key

Updated: Mar 26

By the time a child reaches grade four, reading is no longer explicitly taught—it becomes a tool for learning across all subjects. If a child has not yet developed independent reading skills by the end of grade three, they are at risk of struggling in every subject. This can negatively impact their self-esteem, willingness to learn, and may even lead to behavioural challenges in later grades.

Why Early Intervention Matters Reading recovery often requires one-on-one intervention, something that classroom teachers simply do not have the capacity to provide. While computer-based programs are sometimes used as a supplement, they are not a comprehensive solution. Schools may offer extra support for children identified by their teachers, but the process is often slow. Unfortunately, many parents are hesitant to acknowledge that their child needs help, which can delay the intervention they need. Without parental support and advocacy, additional assistance may be limited or unavailable from your child's school.

Signs Your Child May Need Reading Support If your child is in grades 1 to 3 and struggling with reading, they may benefit from an individualized reading recovery program. Some common signs include:

  • Difficulty sounding out words: Your child struggles to blend sounds together or frequently guesses words instead of decoding them.

  • Challenges with rhyming: They have difficulty recognizing or creating rhyming words.

  • Slow, labored reading: Reading is slow, with frequent errors and a lack of fluency.

  • Poor spelling: They struggle with spelling, even with simple words.

  • Difficulty following directions: They have trouble understanding and executing basic instructions, which may signal broader comprehension issues.

  • Trouble retelling a story: Summarizing or recounting a story is challenging, indicating difficulties with comprehension.

  • Frustration or anxiety about reading: Your child may avoid reading or become upset when asked to read.
